Shelves sag because of span, not because of grade

Which plywood for a wardrobe? Why shelves sag and shutters warp, a shelf-span thickness guide, and the grade you actually need for a bedroom wardrobe.

Wardrobes rarely fail as boxes. The carcass is usually sound a decade later. What fails is a shelf with a permanent dip in the middle, or a shutter that no longer closes flush against its neighbour.

Neither is fixed by buying a more expensive grade. Both are fixed by getting thickness, span and edge sealing right — which is why this guide spends more time on geometry than on grades.

The short answer

  • Grade: MR (IS:303). A bedroom is a dry room.
  • Carcass: 19 mm.
  • Shutters: 19 mm. Never below 18 mm.
  • Shelves: 19 mm up to 2.5 ft span; more, or supported, beyond 3 ft.
  • Back panel: 12 mm, housed in rebates.
  • Every cut edge sealed, including the top edge of each shutter.

Why shelves sag

A loaded shelf is a beam, and a beam's stiffness rises sharply with its depth while deflection rises sharply with its span. That is why a 2 ft shelf carrying the same stack of clothes stays flat while a 4 ft shelf slowly bows.

Three fixes cheaper than more thickness

Lip the front edge. A strip of timber glued along the front of a shelf increases its effective depth and stiffens it considerably, for a fraction of the cost of going from 19 mm to 25 mm across the whole sheet.

Add a vertical divider. Halving a span is worth more than any thickness increase, and in a wardrobe a divider is usually a design improvement anyway.

Use block board for wide shelves. Its core of solid timber battens runs lengthwise, making it stiffer along its length than plywood of equal thickness — and lighter. See types of plywood in India.

One caution on block board: it holds edge-driven screws less reliably than plywood, because a screw may land between battens. Use plywood where hinges and hardware are fixed.

Why shutters warp

A shutter is the most demanding element in any furniture: a large, thin panel, supported along one edge only, with genuinely different conditions on its two faces. Inside a wardrobe is still, enclosed and slow to change. Outside is the room.

When a panel takes up or gives off moisture unevenly across its two faces, it moves. That is warp, and it is a moisture-balance problem rather than a quality problem.

Four things prevent it:

  1. Thickness. 18–19 mm. This is the largest single factor.
  2. Seal all four edges. The top edge of a wardrobe shutter is almost always left raw because nobody sees it — and it is a direct route into the core.
  3. Finish both faces. If the outside is laminated, the inside needs a balancing finish. A panel finished on one side only will cup toward the unfinished face. This is the most commonly skipped step and one of the most consequential.
  4. Ventilate. A wardrobe that is rarely opened, in a closed room, against an outside wall, is the worst case. Vents in the back panel help.

Why MR is usually right

A bedroom sees ambient humidity, and MR grade is engineered precisely for ambient humidity. Specifying BWP for a bedroom wardrobe is not a safety margin — it is money that would do more good spent on 19 mm shutters, proper edge banding and better hinges.

Two exceptions worth checking:

  • A wardrobe against an exterior wall that gets driven rain. Leave a ventilated air gap of 15–20 mm behind the back panel, or step the back panel and carcass up to a phenolic-bonded grade. The air gap is usually the better answer because it treats the cause.
  • A wardrobe in a bathroom-adjacent dressing area with poor ventilation. BWR is reasonable here.

Hinges and what they screw into

A hinge is only as good as what it is screwed into.

Screw holding depends on the core. A screw driven into a void has nothing to grip, which is why hinges on cheap board work loose within a couple of years. Turn a sheet edge-on and check for gaps before you buy — the method is in how to check plywood quality.

Hinges have a finite adjustment range. They will correct a small error. They cannot absorb a board that changes thickness across its own width. A calibrated board — ground to one uniform thickness across the full sheet — is what keeps a row of shutters showing an even reveal. In a wardrobe with four or six shutters side by side, this is very visible.

Heavy shutters need more hinges. A tall 19 mm shutter with a laminate on both faces is heavier than it looks. Under-hinging is a common cause of drooping shutters that gets blamed on the board.

A specification for a standard wardrobe

Wardrobe — 7 ft tall × 6 ft wide, two bays

  • Carcass sides, top, bottom: MR, 19 mm
  • Central vertical divider: MR, 19 mm
  • Shelves (2.5 ft span after divider): MR, 19 mm, front edge lipped
  • Hanging rail support panels: MR, 19 mm
  • Shutters: MR, 19 mm, four edges banded, both faces finished
  • Back panel: MR, 12 mm, housed in rebates on all four sides
  • Drawer sides 18 mm, bottoms 12 mm
  • Hardwood core, calibrated board, single batch
  • 15 mm ventilated gap if against an exterior wall

Loft and overhead storage. Worth its own note, because loads are routinely underestimated. Loft units end up holding suitcases, bedding and stored goods — considerably more than the clothes below.

Specify 19 mm, keep spans short with dividers, and make sure the unit is fixed into the wall rather than relying on the wardrobe below to carry it.

Questions we get asked

What thickness of plywood is best for a wardrobe? 19 mm for carcass, shutters and shelves; 12 mm for back panels. Shelves spanning over 3 ft need 25 mm or a mid-support.

Which plywood grade should I use for a wardrobe? MR grade (IS:303) for a normal bedroom. Consider a phenolic-bonded grade only where the wardrobe backs onto a damp exterior wall.

How do I stop wardrobe shelves from sagging? Match thickness to span, lip the front edge, and add a vertical divider for wide bays. Block board is a good option for long shelves.

Why do wardrobe shutters warp? Insufficient thickness, unsealed edges, and finishing one face but not the other — usually all three together.

Is 16 mm plywood enough for wardrobe shutters? It can work for short shutters but is marginal for full-height ones. 18–19 mm is the safer specification, particularly in humid regions.

Should the inside of a wardrobe be laminated? It should at least be finished. A panel finished on one face only will tend to cup toward the unfinished side.

Is block board or plywood better for a wardrobe? Block board for long shelves and tall shutters; plywood for carcass sides and anywhere hardware is screwed. Many good wardrobes use both.
