Grade is a water rating, not a quality ranking
Plywood grades explained simply. What MR, BWR, BWP, Marine and FR actually mean, which IS standard each one follows, and how to match the right grade to every room.
Almost every plywood conversation starts in the wrong place. Someone asks for "good quality plywood", a dealer reaches for the most expensive sheet on the rack, and a bedroom wardrobe ends up built from a board designed for boat hulls.
Grade is not a quality ranking. It is a water rating — a statement about what the glue can survive. Choosing well means matching the board to the wettest hour it will ever face, not to the biggest number you can afford.

What actually changes between them
The veneers are not the headline. The glue is.
MR — Moisture Resistant. A melamine-urea-formaldehyde bond. It shrugs off humidity, steam drifting through a room, the general dampness of a monsoon.
What it is not designed for is standing water. MR is frequently mis-sold as "semi-waterproof", which is a misleading description of what it does. It is an interior-grade board and an excellent one for interiors.
Use it for: bedrooms, living rooms, wardrobes, TV units, wall panelling, study furniture, storage.
BWR — Boiling Water Resistant. Moves to a phenolic bond — a fundamentally more water-stable chemistry than MR uses.
The relevant property for a home is not literal boiling but resistance to cyclical wetting: repeated small wettings followed by drying. That cycle is what breaks a bond over years, and it is exactly what a kitchen delivers.
Use it for: kitchen carcasses and shutters, bathroom vanities outside splash range, utility areas, balconies under cover.
BWP — Boiling Water Proof. Also phenolic-bonded. The practical difference from BWR is how much punishment the finished board is certified to take: BWP is tested by boiling it continuously for 72 hours and confirming it has not delaminated.
Use it for: under-sink cabinets, washing-machine surrounds, anything where standing water is possible, semi-exposed balcony and terrace units, outdoor furniture.
Marine — IS:710. Undiluted phenolic resin and a denser, gap-free core. Specified where water is not an event but a permanent condition.
Use it for: boat building, submersion, industrial applications. It is generally more than a domestic interior requires — BWP already survives the 72-hour boil.
FR — Fire Resistant. FR sits outside the water ladder entirely. It is not a wetter version of anything.
FR plywood is treated with fire-retardant chemicals that slow ignition and limit flame spread, and it is certified to IS:5509. It is specified for hotels, hospitals, schools, public buildings and larger commercial premises where fire-safety codes apply.
If a code requires FR, no amount of Marine or BWP grade substitutes for it — they solve a different problem. Whether your project requires FR depends on building type, occupancy and applicable regulations; confirm with your architect and the local fire authority rather than with a supplier.

The two costly mistakes
Over-specifying dry rooms. Buying BWP for a bedroom wardrobe is not a safety margin. A bedroom sees ambient humidity, which is precisely what MR is engineered for. The money would do more good spent on thickness, edge sealing and hardware — the three things that actually determine whether a wardrobe still works in fifteen years.
Under-specifying the wet zone. The under-sink cabinet is where kitchens fail, because it is the one place that meets liquid water rather than airborne moisture. A slow drip from a trap runs down the back of the carcass and collects on the base panel, unnoticed behind a shutter, for months.
What grade does not tell you
This is the most important limitation to understand.
Grade describes the bond. It says nothing about the core underneath it.
A sheet labelled BWP with a hollow, gappy core will fail you sooner than an honest MR board used in the right room. The grade governs the glue chemistry. It tells you nothing about:
- whether core veneers were composed edge-to-edge without gaps
- whether the board was calibrated to a uniform thickness
- whether it was treated against borers and termites
- whether the batch was actually tested

How to specify in one line. When you order, state the room and the grade together:
"BWR, 19 mm, 8 × 4, for kitchen shutters."
That single line prevents the two most common ordering errors — the wrong water rating and the wrong thickness for the span.
How we handle grades
Lennor Ply manufactures all five grades — MR, BWR, BWP, Marine and FR — on the same sixteen-station line in Hassan, Karnataka.
The point worth making is what does not change with grade. Every board, MR included, gets a composed gap-free core, calibration to a uniform thickness, ACC preservative treatment against borers and termites, and laboratory testing against IS:303 and IS:710 before dispatch. The grade changes the resin. It does not change the standard of construction.
Boards are available in 4, 6, 9, 12, 16, 19 and 25 mm thicknesses, in 8 × 4, 7 × 4 and 6 × 4 ft sheets.
Questions we get asked
What is the difference between MR and BWR plywood? MR uses a melamine-urea-formaldehyde bond suited to ambient humidity in dry interiors. BWR uses a phenolic bond that withstands repeated wetting, which is why it suits kitchens and bathrooms.
Is BWP the same as marine plywood? No, though both are phenolic-bonded and both undergo a 72-hour boil test. Marine grade (IS:710) uses undiluted phenolic resin with a denser, gap-free core and is intended for constant water exposure. BWP is the right choice for wet areas in a building.
Which plywood grade is best for a kitchen? BWR for the main carcasses and shutters, BWP for the under-sink cabinet. Marine grade is generally more than a domestic kitchen needs.
What does IS 303 and IS 710 mean? They are Indian Standards for plywood. IS:303 covers general-purpose plywood including MR, BWR and BWP grades; IS:710 covers marine-grade plywood. IS:5509 covers fire-retardant plywood.
Is MR plywood waterproof? No. MR resists ambient moisture and humidity, not standing water. For anything that meets liquid water, use a phenolic-bonded grade.
Do I need FR plywood in a home? Usually not for a private residence. FR is specified where fire-safety codes apply — typically hotels, hospitals, schools and commercial buildings. Confirm the requirement with your architect and local authority.
Can I use one grade for the whole house? You can, but it wastes money in one direction or risks failure in the other. Grade by room.
