A kitchen is three different moisture problems
Which plywood for a modular kitchen? Split the kitchen into wet, damp and dry zones, specify each properly, and stop paying BWP prices for upper cabinets.
Modular kitchens fail in a predictable order, and the first casualty is almost always the same: the cabinet under the sink. Everything else can be built from an ordinary interior board and last fifteen years. That one carcass, built from the same board, swells at the base within a few years.
So the useful question is not "which plywood for a kitchen" but which plywood for which part of the kitchen.
The short answer: three zones

Specifying BWP throughout is a common recommendation and mostly a waste. Specifying MR throughout is a guaranteed failure. Zoning is the answer.
Why the sink cabinet goes first
Every other part of a kitchen deals with airborne moisture — steam from cooking, humidity, the occasional wiped spill. The under-sink cabinet deals with liquid water, sometimes standing, usually unnoticed.
A slow drip from a trap joint or a water-purifier connection does not announce itself. It runs down the back of the carcass and collects on the base panel — horizontal, typically unsealed on its underside, hidden behind a shutter that only opens to reach the bin. By the time anyone notices a smell or a soft edge, the base has been wet for months.
Boiling-water-proof grade exists for exactly this. BWP is tested by boiling it continuously for 72 hours without delaminating, which is a good proxy for surviving years of intermittent standing water.
Three things to specify for the sink unit:
- BWP grade for the carcass and, especially, the base panel.
- All edges sealed, including the underside of the base and the back edges.
- A shallow drip tray under the unit — inexpensive, and it catches years of small leaks.
Why the working run needs BWR
The rest of the base run does not see standing water, but it sees something almost as testing: cycling.
Steam, splashes, wiped surfaces, a mopped floor — small wettings, repeated daily, followed by drying. Each cycle makes the board swell slightly and shrink back, and every one of those movements stresses the glue lines. A melamine-urea-formaldehyde bond (MR) is not designed for that pattern. A phenolic bond (BWR) is.
This is where kitchens are won or lost over a fifteen-year horizon, and it is the one grade decision worth insisting on.
Shutters. Kitchen shutters deserve the same grade as the carcass, for three reasons:
- They take the most direct steam and splash exposure of any element.
- They are the most visible part of the kitchen, so any swelling or warping is immediately obvious.
- They are large, thin, unsupported panels — the geometry most prone to movement.
Specify: BWR, 18–19 mm, all four edges banded, both faces finished. A shutter laminated on the outside only will cup toward the unfinished face.
How thick, and where
Grade handles water. Thickness handles load — and a kitchen carries more weight than any other furniture in a house.

Upper cabinets are wall-hung and carry crockery — do not reduce carcass thickness there to save on sheets.
The joinery matters as much as the grade
Raise the plinth. Keep base panels off the floor. Floors get mopped, and a carcass sitting on wet tile wicks water upward regardless of grade.
Ventilate. Small gaps at the rear of base units, and a plinth that is not sealed airtight, let a cabinet dry between wettings. This does as much for longevity as a grade upgrade.
Seal the sink cut-out. The countertop opening around the sink is a common leak path into the cabinet below. Silicone it properly.
Seal every site cut. Hardware cut-outs, service holes and pipe notches are usually cut on site and almost never sealed. Each one is exposed core.
Order one batch. Kitchen shutters sit in a long, visible row. Sheets from different production lots can vary slightly in thickness and face shade, and in a straight line it shows.

Do you need marine grade?. Generally no.
Marine grade (IS:710) uses undiluted phenolic resin and a denser core, and is intended for constant water exposure and submersion — boat building, industrial use. A domestic kitchen, even a heavily used one, is not that environment.
BWP already survives a 72-hour continuous boil. Where a kitchen fails, it is almost never because BWP was insufficient; it is because the wrong zone got the wrong grade, or an edge was left unsealed. See the waterproof plywood buying guide before paying a Marine premium indoors.

Calibration is worth singling out for kitchens: a long run of shutters showing an even reveal depends on every board being the same thickness corner to corner. And for larger kitchens, panels can be cut to a cutting list at the factory, nested to reduce wastage and delivered labelled — usually better than cutting a kitchen out of full sheets on site.

Questions we get asked
Which plywood is best for a modular kitchen? BWR grade for base units, upper cabinets and shutters, with BWP for the under-sink cabinet. MR grade is not appropriate for a kitchen working run.
Is BWP plywood necessary for the entire kitchen? No. BWP earns its cost where standing water is possible — principally the sink unit. Using it throughout adds cost without adding meaningful life to upper cabinets.
Which is better for a kitchen, BWR or BWP? Both, in different places. BWR for the general run, BWP for the wet zone. They are not competing options so much as a zoning decision.
What thickness should modular kitchen cabinets be? 18–19 mm for carcasses and shutters, 12 mm for back panels and drawer bottoms, 18 mm for drawer sides.
Why do kitchen cabinets swell at the bottom? Almost always an unsealed base edge combined with a carcass sitting directly on the floor. Sealing all edges and raising the plinth prevents most of it.
Should I use marine plywood in my kitchen? It is generally more than a domestic kitchen requires. BWP is the sensible ceiling indoors.
