The edge of a board tells you how it was built
How to check plywood quality in two minutes at the stack. Four physical checks anyone can do, plus the two things you can only find out by asking.
Plywood is unusually easy to sell badly. Once a board is laminated and screwed into a carcass, everything that determines whether it lasts twenty years is invisible. The buyer sees a finish. The failure, when it comes, happens somewhere they were never able to look.
There is one exception, and it is why experienced carpenters pick up a sheet and turn it sideways before saying a word: the edge is a cross-section. It is the one place a board cannot hide how it was built.
Four checks you can do yourself, and two questions only the supplier can answer.
The two-minute inspection
Do this on a sheet pulled from the middle of the stack, not the display board on the counter.
Check 1: Gaps in the core. Turn the sheet edge-on and look at the middle layers. You are looking for voids — dark slots or hollows between core veneers, sometimes a couple of millimetres, sometimes wide enough to slide a visiting card into.
A void is exactly what it looks like: an absence of wood where wood should be. It appears when core veneers are laid down as loose pieces that do not quite meet, rather than being jointed edge-to-edge into a full-width sheet first.
What it costs you later. A screw driven into a void has nothing to grip — this is why hinges on cheap boards work loose within a couple of years. A shelf with voids under load sags at the hollow. Water that finds a void travels along it instead of stopping.
This is the single most reliable check, because closing those gaps is a real production stage — core composing — and it is the stage most often skipped when a board is built to a price.
Check 2: Even, odd-numbered layers. Run your eye along the stack of veneers.
Even thickness. The layers should be roughly consistent and run parallel from one end of the sheet to the other. Wavy layers, or a core visibly thicker at one end, mean the sheet was never properly calibrated — and it will not sit flush against a wall or against another board.
Odd count. Plywood is built from an odd number of cross-laid veneers so the face grain runs the same direction on both sides and the board stays balanced. Count them. An even count suggests a sheet assembled without much regard for how plywood works.
Check 3: Thickness, measured — not felt. Take a vernier caliper and measure at three or four points on the same sheet, including near opposite corners.
You are not checking whether it matches the nominal figure. You are checking whether it changes across one board. A sheet that is consistently 18.8 mm is workable, because you can design around a known number. A sheet that reads 18.6 mm at one corner and 19.3 mm at another is the one that will make hinges misalign and shutter reveals uneven.
Ask whether the board is calibrated, not whether it is sanded. They are different operations: sanding smooths a surface, calibration grinds the sheet to a true dimension.
Check 4: Flatness and edge feel
Sight down the sheet. Lay it flat and look along it from one corner, as you would check a plank for a bow. You are looking for cupping across the width and twist along the length. A board that arrives twisted does not straighten out once fixed in place — it fights the carcass, and the carcass eventually loses.
Feel the cut edge. It should be dense and continuous, not spongy, and should not shed splinters at a touch.
One caveat: flatness is partly a storage problem. A good sheet stored on edge against a wall for three weeks will take a bow. Check how the stock is stored as well as how it looks.
The two you have to ask about
Two things genuinely cannot be read off the board.
Preservative treatment. Borers and termites do not care what grade is stamped on a sheet. Ask whether the board was treated and — more importantly — how.
A preservative that penetrates the board is a different proposition from a surface coat that wears away with handling, cutting and finishing. Every cut you make exposes untreated core if the treatment was only on the surface.
A good answer describes a process: an immersion or dipping stage on the production line. Lennor boards are dipped in an ACC preservative bath as a station on the line rather than as a finishing touch. More in termite-resistant plywood explained.
Testing. Ask what the board was tested against, and who tested it.
IS:303 and IS:710 are the relevant Indian standards, and BWP and Marine grades should have been through a 72-hour continuous boil test. IS:5509 applies to fire-retardant grades.
"ISI certified" printed on a brochure is not the same as a batch that was sampled, tested and signed off. Ask whether testing is per batch or per product line, and whether the manufacturer has its own laboratory.

What you cannot check yourself
Some things need a laboratory: glue shear strength, moisture content at pressing, formaldehyde emission. No inspection at a counter settles those.
Two practical substitutes:
Buy one sheet and cut it. Take an offcut, look at the cut face, and see whether the core matches what the edge suggested. It costs one sheet and it is the most honest test available to a buyer.
Leave an offcut outside. Seal the edges on one piece, leave another raw, and put both out through a fortnight of monsoon. What each does tells you more about real-world behaviour than any brochure — and it is evidence from your own climate.
Suppliers confident in their board will encourage both. That reaction is itself a data point.
Warning signs worth walking away from
- The seller will only show you the display board.
- No answer on which IS standard the board meets.
- "It's waterproof" offered as a grade.
- Visible voids on the edge of the first sheet you pick.
- Thickness varying noticeably across one sheet.
- Sheets stored on edge, or resting against a damp wall.
- Reluctance to put the grade and standard on a written quote.

Questions we get asked
How can I identify good quality plywood? Turn a sheet edge-on and look for gaps in the core, check the veneer layers are even and odd in number, measure the thickness at several points on one sheet, and sight down the board for flatness. Then ask how it was treated and what it was tested against.
What are core gaps in plywood and why do they matter? Voids between core veneers, caused by laying loose pieces instead of jointing them into a full sheet. They weaken screw holding, cause shelves to sag and let water travel inside the board.
How do I check if plywood is ISI certified? Ask which IS standard the board is certified to — IS:303, IS:710 or IS:5509 — and whether the specific batch was tested. A brochure claim about a product line is weaker evidence than batch-level testing.
Can I tell plywood quality by weight? Not reliably. Density varies with timber species and can be increased in ways that do not improve performance. The edge tells you more than the weight.
Should I buy plywood without seeing it? If you must, buy from a supplier who will state grade, standard, thickness and size in writing, and inspect on delivery before the sheets are unloaded.
What does calibrated plywood mean? The board has been ground on both faces after pressing so the whole sheet is one uniform thickness. It is what keeps hinges aligned and laminate flat.
