MRMoisture Resistant — interior grade
IS:303

MR plywood, for the dry rooms

MR stands for Moisture Resistant. It is bonded with a melamine-urea-formaldehyde resin and made to IS:303, and it is the correct — and most economical — choice for every dry room in a house. It resists humidity and steam. It is not designed for standing water, and it is often mis-sold as though it were.

What MR grade actually means

MR resists moisture in the air. It does not resist water as a liquid. The phrase "semi-waterproof" gets used for MR grade and describes nothing real: MR handles a different type of exposure, not a smaller quantity of the same one. Used in the room it was designed for, it is a long-life material.

Where to use it

  • Bedroom wardrobes, beds and side tables
  • Living-room TV units and display shelving
  • Wall panelling on a batten framework
  • Study, storage and loft units
  • Office workstations and desking

Where it is the wrong choice

Kitchens
A kitchen delivers repeated small wettings. That is what a phenolic bond is for — use BWR.
Bathrooms and utility areas
Use BWR outside splash range and BWP within it.
Balconies and anything semi-exposed
Use BWP.

How this board is made

The resin changes with the grade. Nothing else does — every board runs the same seventeen consecutive stations at our line in Hassan, Karnataka, and these four apply to MR grade exactly as they do to every other:

Composed core
Core veneers jointed edge-to-edge into full-size sheets before assembly, so the finished board has no internal voids.
Calibrated thickness
Both faces ground after pressing so the whole sheet is one uniform thickness — a different operation from sanding.
ACC preservative treatment
Dipped in an acid copper chromate bath as a station on the line, so the treatment penetrates rather than coating the surface.
Laboratory tested
Samples from every batch tested against IS:303 and IS:710 — moisture content, glue shear strength and water resistance — before dispatch.

Architects and bulk buyers are welcome to walk the line and take a board away to cut open before ordering.

Choosing between the grades

Grade is a water rating, not a quality ranking. The most common and most expensive error is buying up when the room does not need it.

Guides worth reading first

Questions we get asked

Is MR plywood waterproof?

No. It resists humidity and steam, not standing or repeated liquid water. Use a phenolic-bonded grade where water is present.

Is MR plywood good quality?

Grade and quality are separate things. A well-made MR board with a composed core and calibrated thickness, used in a dry room, is the correct specification.

Can MR plywood be used in a kitchen?

Not for the working run, carcasses or shutters. Use BWR, with BWP under the sink.
