BWR plywood, built for kitchens

BWR stands for Boiling Water Resistant. It moves from MR grade's melamine-urea-formaldehyde bond to a phenolic one, which is what allows it to survive repeated wetting and drying. It is the correct specification for a kitchen working run, a bathroom vanity outside splash range, and a utility area.

What BWR grade actually means

The property that matters in a home is not literal boiling — it is resistance to cycling. Small wettings, repeated daily, followed by drying. Each cycle makes a board swell slightly and shrink back, and every one of those movements stresses the glue lines. A phenolic bond is formulated for that pattern; a melamine-urea-formaldehyde bond is not.

Where it is the wrong choice

The under-sink cabinet
Standing water is possible there. Step up to BWP for that carcass and its base.
Dry bedrooms and living rooms
MR grade is designed for ambient humidity and costs less.

19 mm for carcasses and shutters, 12 mm for back panels and drawer bottoms. Kitchens carry heavier loads than other furniture, so this is a poor place to reduce thickness.

How this board is made

The resin changes with the grade. Nothing else does — every board runs the same seventeen consecutive stations at our line in Hassan, Karnataka, and these four apply to BWR grade exactly as they do to every other:

Composed core
Core veneers jointed edge-to-edge into full-size sheets before assembly, so the finished board has no internal voids.
Calibrated thickness
Both faces ground after pressing so the whole sheet is one uniform thickness — a different operation from sanding.
ACC preservative treatment
Dipped in an acid copper chromate bath as a station on the line, so the treatment penetrates rather than coating the surface.
Laboratory tested
Samples from every batch tested against IS:303 and IS:710 — moisture content, glue shear strength and water resistance — before dispatch.

Architects and bulk buyers are welcome to walk the line and take a board away to cut open before ordering.

Choosing between the grades

Grade is a water rating, not a quality ranking. The most common and most expensive error is buying up when the room does not need it.
