Most plywood furniture fails at an unsealed edge

Most plywood furniture fails from detailing, not from the board. Nine rules across specification, installation and upkeep that add years to what you build.

Plywood furniture usually fails for reasons that have nothing to do with the plywood. An unsealed edge, a shelf spanning too far, a carcass sitting on a floor that gets mopped — these account for more failures than board quality does, and every one of them is free to avoid at the time of building.

Nine rules, grouped by when you can apply them. The first three are worth the most.

At specification

Rule 1: Match the grade to the room, not the budget. Grade is a water rating. Over-specify a bedroom and you spend money that buys nothing; under-specify a kitchen and you will rebuild it.

  • Dry rooms — bedrooms, living rooms, study, storage: MR
  • Kitchens, bathroom vanities, utility: BWR
  • Under sinks, balconies, outdoor: BWP

Rule 2: Match thickness to span, not to grade. Sag is geometry. A shelf's deflection rises sharply with unsupported length, which is why a 4 ft shelf bows while a 2 ft shelf carrying the same load stays flat.

Lipping the front edge of a shelf stiffens it considerably for very little cost — often more cost-effective than increasing thickness.

Rule 3: Buy a board with a void-free core. A screw driven into a void has nothing to grip. This is why hinges on cheap boards work loose within a couple of years, and why a shelf can fail at a point rather than sagging evenly.

Check before you buy: turn a sheet edge-on, look for dark slots between core veneers, and check a sheet from the middle of the stack. The full routine is in how to check plywood quality.

At installation

Rule 4: Seal every cut edge — including the invisible ones

The single most valuable thing on this list.

Water almost never enters through a face. Faces are sanded and usually laminated or polished. It enters at the edges, where core veneers are exposed end-on like a row of open straws.

Seal or band all four edges of every panel. The ones most often missed:

  • The top edge of a wardrobe shutter — nobody sees it.
  • The underside of a cabinet base panel.
  • Site cuts for hinges, handles, sink openings, pipe notches and service holes.
  • The back edges of a carcass against a wall.

Every one of these is exposed core, and each is a route in.

Rule 5: Finish both faces of every panel. A panel laminated on one face and left raw on the other takes up and gives off moisture unevenly across its thickness. It will cup toward the unfinished side.

This applies especially to shutters, where the difference between the inside of a cabinet and the room is greatest — and where cupping is most visible.

Rule 6: Break contact with floors and damp walls

  • Raise carcasses on a plinth. Floors get mopped; a base panel on wet tile wicks water upward regardless of grade. It is also the main route by which subterranean termites reach furniture.
  • Leave an air gap — 15–20 mm — behind furniture on exterior walls, so a back panel is not pressed against damp masonry through a monsoon.

Rule 7: Ventilate enclosed spaces. A cabinet that can dry between wettings lasts considerably longer than one that cannot. Small gaps at the rear of base units, vents in wardrobe back panels, and a plinth not sealed airtight to the floor all help.

This matters most in humid regions, where the drying half of the wet-dry cycle is slow. It costs nothing at the joinery stage and cannot be added later without dismantling.

In use

Rule 8: Deal with water quickly, and check the places you cannot see. Most water damage is slow and hidden rather than dramatic.

  • Wipe spills rather than letting them stand, particularly at edges and joints.
  • Check under the sink twice a year. A slow drip from a trap or purifier connection runs down the back of the carcass and collects on the base, unnoticed for months. A shallow drip tray catches years of this.
  • Look behind built-in furniture annually for damp patches, fine powder, small round holes or mud tubes. Caught early, these are minor; caught late, they are a rebuild.
  • Re-seal edges if banding lifts or a laminate edge starts to open.

Rule 9: Adjust hardware before it damages the board. Hinges and slides work loose over years. A drooping shutter that is left drooping puts continuous load on a few screws in a small area of board, and eventually those screws pull out and take core with them.

  • Tighten hinge screws annually; adjust the reveal while it is still adjustable.
  • Add hinges to heavy shutters rather than over-tightening the existing ones.
  • Do not over-tighten. Stripping a screw hole is worse than a slightly loose one; if a hole strips, plug and re-drill rather than forcing a larger screw.

Six of the nine are free or nearly free. They are also the ones most often skipped.

What the board has to bring

Detailing only carries you so far. The board should arrive with:

  • A composed, gap-free core for screw holding.
  • Calibrated thickness across the full sheet, so hinges align and laminates sit flat.
  • Penetrating preservative treatment that survives cutting — see termite-resistant plywood.
  • Flatness, and storage flat and off the floor before the carpenter starts.

Questions we get asked

How long does plywood furniture last? It depends far more on grade selection, edge sealing and installation than on any single figure. Well-specified, well-detailed furniture in a dry room is a long-life proposition; a poorly sealed kitchen unit can fail within a few years.

What is the most important thing for making plywood furniture last? Sealing every cut edge. Water enters at edges, not through faces, and edge sealing costs very little at the time of building.

How do I stop plywood from swelling? Seal all edges, keep carcasses off floors that get wet, ventilate enclosed cabinets, and use the correct grade for the room's exposure.

Why do my cabinet shutters no longer close properly? Usually warping from unsealed edges or one-sided finishing, or hinges that have worked loose. Check the hinges first — it is the easier fix.

Can damaged plywood furniture be repaired? Superficial damage and lifted edge banding can be repaired. Delamination and swelling from prolonged wetting generally cannot be reversed, though the affected panel can be replaced.

How often should I inspect built-in furniture? Once a year is sufficient for most homes — look under sinks, behind units against exterior walls, and at edges near floors.

Does polish or laminate protect plywood? On the face, yes. Neither helps an unsealed edge, which is where the problem usually starts.
