Settle the board before your carpenter quotes

Furniture in Hassan is still mostly made the good way — by a carpenter, on site or in a small workshop, from sheets somebody bought that week. That produces better joinery than most factory furniture. It also means the plywood decision often gets made in a two-minute conversation, sometimes by whoever is standing nearest the dealer's counter.

This guide is written for that conversation: what to settle before your carpenter quotes, so that the two of you are agreeing about the same board.

The short answer

For most home furniture in Hassan:

• Wardrobes, beds, TV units, study tables, wall panelling: MR grade (IS:303), 18–19 mm for carcasses and shutters, 12 mm for back panels and drawer bottoms.
• Kitchen furniture: BWR grade, stepping up to BWP under the sink.
• Anything on a balcony or against an exterior wall that gets damp: BWP.

Who picks the board

In practice, three arrangements are common in Hassan, and each carries a different risk.

The carpenter supplies material and labour together. Simplest for you. The risk is that the material line has to absorb any surprises, which creates a quiet incentive toward thinner and cheaper boards. If you use this arrangement, put the grade and thickness in the agreement.

You buy material, the carpenter charges labour. More control and usually better value, provided you specify correctly. This guide is most useful here.

An interior designer or contractor manages both. Convenient. Ask to see the specification anyway — you are entitled to know which grade is going into your bedroom.

The failure mode in all three is the same phrase: "good quality ply". It is not a specification. Write down a grade, an IS standard and a thickness per element.

Specify by element, not by room

Carpenters buy by element, so specify that way. It also stops you paying for 19 mm where 12 mm would do.

Standard thicknesses available run 4, 6, 9, 12, 16, 19 and 25 mm, in 8 × 4, 7 × 4 and 6 × 4 ft sheets.

What the climate adds

Two adjustments are worth making locally.

Shutters deserve attention. A long monsoon means months of high ambient humidity. A shutter is a large, thin, unsupported panel held at one edge — the element most likely to move. Do not economise on shutter thickness, and insist that all four edges are sealed, including the top and bottom edges nobody sees.

Furniture against exterior walls. Bedrooms in older Hassan houses often have a wardrobe backing onto an outside wall that gets driven rain. If that describes your layout, either leave an air gap behind the unit or step that carcass up to a phenolic-bonded grade. This is a genuinely local consideration and it is worth raising with your carpenter.

The conversation to have with your carpenter. Five questions that prevent most disputes:

1. "What thickness are you assuming for the carcass and the shutters?" Get it before the quote, not after.
2. "What span are the shelves?" Anything over three feet needs either more thickness or a support.
3. "How will you seal the cut edges?" Every cut exposes core. Edge banding or sealing is not optional in this climate.
4. "Are all the sheets from one lot?" Adjacent shutters from different batches can differ slightly in shade and thickness.
5. "What is the wastage estimate?" If it is high, pre-cut supply may be cheaper overall — panels nested and cut at the factory rather than on site.

Where furniture actually fails

Not usually in the board.

• Sagging shelves — a span-and-thickness error.
• Warped shutters — thin panels, unsealed edges, or humidity, usually all three.
• Loose hinges — screws driven into a void in the core, or a carcass too thin to hold the hardware.
• Swollen bottom edges in kitchens — an unsealed edge sitting where water collects.
• Borer damage — untreated or surface-treated boards.

Four of those five are specification or workmanship issues, not grade issues. Which is why buying a premium grade and then cutting corners on thickness and edge sealing is the most common way to waste money on furniture.

Buying for a whole house at once. If you are furnishing several rooms, order in as few lots as possible. Sheets from a single production run are more consistent in thickness and face shade, which matters most where two shutters sit side by side.
