Plywood or MDF, and the jobs MDF genuinely does better
Plywood vs MDF compared fairly on strength, moisture, screw holding, finish and cost — including the jobs where MDF is genuinely the better choice.
This comparison is usually written by someone who sells one of the two, which is why it usually ends in a verdict. It should not. Plywood and MDF are different materials with different strengths, and a well-built home often contains both.
Here is an honest comparison, including the jobs MDF does better.
What each one actually is
Plywood is made from thin sheets of timber — veneers — peeled from a log, laid with the grain of each layer crossing the last, and bonded under heat and pressure. It is wood, rearranged, and it keeps wood's directional strength.
MDF (medium-density fibreboard) is made from wood fibres broken down almost to their individual strands, mixed with resin and pressed into a uniform panel. It is wood, homogenised, and it has no grain at all.
That single structural difference explains almost every practical difference below.

Where plywood wins
Anywhere hardware is fixed. Hinges, drawer slides, handles and connectors rely on screw holding, and this is the clearest difference between the two. MDF holds an edge-driven screw poorly — the fibres compress and the screw strips. In a wardrobe with shutters opening thousands of times, this matters.
Anywhere there is moisture. Plywood grades run from MR up to Marine, with phenolic bonds designed for standing water. Standard MDF swells badly when wet and, unlike plywood, the swelling is largely irreversible — the fibres expand and do not return. Moisture-resistant MDF exists and is better, but it does not reach BWP territory.
Anywhere there is span or load. Plywood's cross-laid veneers give it far better resistance to bending. An MDF shelf of the same thickness will sag noticeably sooner.
Anywhere weight matters. MDF is heavier for the same dimensions — relevant for wall-hung units and large shutters, where weight loads the fixings.
Where MDF genuinely wins
This is the section that usually gets left out.
Painted finishes. MDF has no grain to telegraph through paint and no seams. A high-quality painted shutter — particularly a flat, modern, matte one — is easier to achieve on MDF than on plywood, and the result is better. If your design calls for painted cabinetry, MDF is not the compromise; it is the correct material.
Routed and profiled work. Because MDF is homogeneous, it machines cleanly in any direction. Shaker-style profiles, curved edges, grooved panels and decorative routing all come out crisper than on plywood, which chips where a router crosses the grain.
Perfectly flat surfaces. MDF is dimensionally very consistent and exceptionally flat. For a large panel that must read as absolutely level under raking light, it has an advantage.
Cost. It is meaningfully cheaper. For a non-structural, dry, painted element, paying a plywood premium buys you nothing.
Curves. Flexible MDF exists for curved work that plywood cannot easily achieve.

The hybrid answer. Good joinery frequently uses both: a plywood carcass with MDF painted shutters. You get screw holding and structure where the furniture is loaded, and the better paint finish where it is seen.
Anyone who tells you a house should be built entirely from one or the other is selling one or the other.
Three things to get right if you use MDF
- Seal every edge thoroughly. MDF edges absorb moisture fast and swell irreversibly. Edge banding is not optional.
- Keep it away from water. No MDF at floor level in a bathroom, and none under a sink. Even moisture-resistant grades are outclassed there.
- Use the right fixings. Avoid edge-driven screws where possible; use connectors designed for MDF, and pilot every hole.
Cost over time
Sheet price favours MDF. Whole-life cost depends on the job.
For a painted, dry, non-structural element, MDF is cheaper both upfront and over time, because it does the job well. For a kitchen carcass or a loaded wardrobe, the cheaper sheet becomes the more expensive decision — replacement labour costs far more than the original material difference.

Is plywood better than MDF? Not universally. Plywood is better for structure, moisture and screw holding. MDF is better for painted finishes, routed detailing and cost in dry, non-structural applications.
Can MDF be used in a kitchen? Moisture-resistant MDF can be used for painted shutters with well-sealed edges, but plywood in BWR or BWP grade is the safer choice for carcasses and anything near water.
Which is better for a wardrobe, MDF or plywood? Plywood for the carcass and shelves — it holds hinges and resists sag. MDF is a good choice for shutters if they are to be painted rather than laminated.
Does MDF swell more than plywood? Yes, and more permanently. Plywood may swell and largely recover; MDF fibres expand irreversibly when saturated.

Which holds screws better? Plywood, particularly for screws driven into an edge. This is one of the clearest practical differences between the two.
Can I use MDF for bathroom furniture? It is not advisable. Use BWP-grade plywood and wall-hang the unit if possible.
